AZ/MX Trip - Post 1 - Medical Clinic

After my semester was over, I hopped on a plane and headed to my old stomping ground of Phoenix, Arizona. While I was there, I went to Puerto Penasco with friends to volunteer at a medical clinic. The group was called:Here's the clinic - basically it was two trailers (and a third for storage). Unfortunately, they didn't have electricity since someone stole their generator. And although there was a bathroom, they didn't have running water so we had to flush the toilet with a bucket of water.I helped file medical records with the clinic organizer's mother, who was also just visiting. My friend Sean is in medical school studying to be a naturopathic doctor. We went with a bunch of his classmates and one doctor from his school. Seeing patients:My friend Maria, a speech pathologist (and also became one of our spanish translators), also joined us and worked with some of the children. And a neighbor of Sean and Queenie is a dentist, Greg. Greg and his wife Keerat came along too. They did checkups and showed the kids how to properly brush their teeth:We all got checkups while we were there as well:Pam, the organizer of the clinic, with Pam and brother - yes, little Pam was named after her:The kids were so cute!Lydia was my favorite. I think she would have gone home with me...
In the afternoon when things started slowing down, we played with the children:Sean and Queenie being silly:Sean and his classmates/other volunteers:Maria, Queenie, Sean, Keerat, and Greg after a long day - still smiling!

Water Disinfection

September marks the 100th anniversary of chlorine disinfection. Boonton Reservoir in Jersey City, NJ was the first to add chlorine to drinking water to protect us from waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
Please visit this website and take the quiz (the answer is D): http://www.americanchemistry.com/100years/. You'll help people in West Africa receive free chlorine to disinfect their water.

It's only a matter of time...

...until someone breaks the 2 hour barrier for the marathon.
Haile Gebrselassie broke his own world record to run a sub 2hr 4min marathon today in Berlin. People - that's a sub 4:44 mile, on average, for 26.2 miles!

Feed the Hungry

Yesterday I volunteered with a group of fellow students at the Capital Area Food Bank (http://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/). It was a very interesting experience, amazing how much food they push through their warehouse! And surprising how much food 15 people can bag up in 3 hours too!

Participate in their upcoming program "Skip a Lunch, Feed a Bunch" on Wednesday, September 17th.

Interesting...buy LCD (not plasma)

Did you know that August was Digital TV Awareness Month?

So, don’t waste energy on TV...

Take the step: With the switch to digital TV coming in 2009 (for more information, see http://www.dtv.gov), many people may be buying new, digital-ready TVs. If you must shop for a new television, look for an LCD (liquid crystal display) screen instead of plasma.

Why: Plasma screens can use up to six times the energy as LCD screens. But each TV model uses a different amount of energy, so always look for the Energy Star label, which indicates that the TV uses at least 30 percent less energy than conventional TVs. Philips recently launched its new Eco-TV, an LCD model that saves energy by dimming the screen when the TV sensors tell it the room is dark, among other measures.
