Part 1 - The Drive...Denver to Moab

I went to Moab this past weekend to run a 1/2 marathon with some friends. I flew into Denver last Thursday night and met my Dad there. On Friday, we awoke in Denver to about 1 inch of snow on the ground and I-70 closed (our shortest route to Utah). So we started heading south on I-25:
I didn't even take any pictures while going over the 1st 10,000 ft mountain pass...because you wouldn't have seen much anyway. It looked about like this:Once we decided to turn south to avoid the 12,000 ft mtn passes, the road was closed because of a downed power line:We had to detour through Manassa...the town where Jack "Manassa Mauler" Dempsey was from:
One of our many stops to clean off the windshield and windshield wipers (because someone broke the windshield wiper fluid thingy...). You can't even read Toyota or the license plate!
So, we made a wrong turn, and thought going over two more 10,000 ft mtn passes wouldn't be so bad...but we were wrong. It wouldn't have been as bad if we weren't stuck behind two cars from Kansas going 15 mph:
The winter's worth of snow that this area got was very evident...this is the wall of snow almost as high as the FJ:
When we got between the two mountains, the sun was actually trying to peak out, and it was quite beautiful (this picture doesn't do it justice):
The 3rd 10,000 ft mountain pass:
Finally over the mountains and conditions quickly improved:
But we ended up detouring all the way down into New Mexico:
Another one of our many stops to clean the windshield...look at the ice build up in front of the tires! On the drivers side, it almost touches the road:
At long last, and not until New Mexico, did the snow finally completely stop and we had an uneventful drive the rest of the way to Moab, Utah (except for that car which we saw in the ditch):
