Can Vegetarians Save the World?
The City of Ghent in Belgium (see photo below) is going meatless one day a week, in a effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become healthier. Starting this past week, they have declared Thursdays "Veggie Day." 370 European climate cities may follow their lead. According to FAO, livestock accounts for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions.
So, can vegetarians save the world? What do you think?

Happier Times
The Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom a few weeks ago! And I actually had time this year to go see them!!
I was up before dawn one day to volunteer for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler:
I was at the last water stop, about mile 8.75, on Haines Point:
That's alotta cups!
The highest we stacked 'em was 4 tiers high:
Took a lot longer than I thought it would to fill up all these cups!
Toward the end of the race, it was a pretty scene with all the pink and green:
We could see the Washington Monument from our water stop (which was near the finish)
After the race, I tried to run home, but stopped a lot to take pics (and b/c there were so many people you had to walk)
Quintessential Jefferson Memorial shot (everyone gets one of these)
Of course, you know me, had to get a shot with all the porta-potties!
President Obama viewing the blossoms? There were three helicopters...but more likely it was just flight training:
The line for the paddle boats was LONG, but I can understand why:
Do they really need this sign? That's what people came to see, the low hanging limbs:
At least it was a beautiful weekend! (the following weekend it poured rain most of the time)

No words
It was a horribly tragic day yesterday in my hometown. Not to sound cliche, but things like this just really don't happen in Middletown, ever, period. Especially not to people I know, and went to school and ran track with. Although I hadn't seen Francie since high school, she's one of those people that you never forget. She was so outgoing, upbeat, and full of life. That's what makes this whole senseless thing that much sadder. My heart goes out to her family and friends, and hope that they find solace in all the wonderful things people are saying about Francie. It sounds like she turned into a wonderful young woman.

For those of you who asked about the other xmas gifts that were part of my family's "things that live in the dark" theme - here you go:
From the first batch of 'shrooms, my friend made soup:

World Water Day!
Today is the 17th International World Water Day! Founded after a recommendation in 1992 by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), the United Nations General Assembly formally designated March 22, 1993 as the first World Water Day. This day is a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Not the big one I've been predicting but...
Yay - it finally snowed a decent amount in DC! Okay, so 5" isn't really a lot, but I'll take it. View from my apt:
Can't see the National Cathedral today:
The most snow my car has ever seen...partially b/c it spent the first 3 years of its life in Phoenix:
The advantage of not working on Mondays, or having class...means I got to go walk around in the snow. Kids sledding near Calvert Street in Rock Creek Park:

Start of the C&O Canal in Georgetown:
Geese on the Potomac:
